The challenge to professional wine critics

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 19:48:22 PDT
The World of Fine Wine magazine' s latest issue (#19) contains a must-read article called "Every one a critic: The future of wine writing." Mike Steinberger provides a fascinating, state-of-the-market assessment of what he references as the "twilight era" of Parker. He makes many valid observations about the inroads being made by what are essentially lower-cost (often free) substitutes for professional (fee-paid) wine criticism. What's going on and how can the professionals respond? The "go

WE GET A good group of commenters here in Sticksville. Lately, we've been hearing quite a bit from a young woman from the Prairies, who has an openminded attitude toward Canadian shows, and an engaged and passionate way of defending them. On the subject of all the changes going on at the CBC, I think she's expressed the necessary corrective point of view better than Richard Stursberg, Kirstine Leyfield, or anybody else at the public broadcaster has managed to do. So I'm bumping her comment here

Cons: RCMP Raid Was a 'Publicity Stunt'

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 13:10:43 PDT
Pass the tissues. Oh how I weep for those poor victims of the RCMP raid of the Cons' headquarters. Not. The tories are scrambling to paint themselves as being oppressed after yesterday's raid (which continues today). The problem is that they appointed the two Elections Canada officials they're now suing and that they applaud the RCMP (even protecting Zaccardelli to the bitter end) except when they're the targets of a legally-sanctioned warrant. And now, they're also trying to implicate the Li

Bush's long-awaited call for curbing emissions falls flat abroad,

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 19:55:44 PDT
: At last, U.S. President Saint George W. Shrub have put a mark day of the month for reining in American pollution — and the command drop level in the international arena, where he have long lagged in tackling planetary warming. "Losership instead of leadership," Germany's environment curate said Thursday of Bush's new strategy. A major disappointment, South Africa said. Too small and too late, a Chinese functionary added. Bush's address Wednesday, in which he said the world's No. One defile

Kristy Lee Cook Leaves American Idol 2008

It's now down to the Top 6 in American Idol 2008.
Last night, and as expected, one of the girls was voted off the show and it was Oregonian Kristy Lee Cook!
Kristy and two other girls were in the danger zone yesterday ... they got the lowest number of votes for their not so good performances of Mariah Carey's songs the night before.
Kristy stood there, side by side with Syesha Mercado and Brooke White.
After her elimination, Kristy Lee playfully sat on the judges' table right in front of Simon Cowell and serenaded him with her performance of Mariah's song 'Forever'.

Next week, the Top 6 will battle it out with Phantom of the Opera composer Andrew Lloyd Webber! That's gotta be hard!

CHI ’08 – a bite-size review

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 01:32:49 PDT
Joanna Bawa, editor of Usability News, has published a short review of the CHI conference. She appreciated that the main feeling of the conference was more closely allied to design, as clearly expressed by Irene McAra McWilliam and Bill Buxton. But it was hard to meet people: “My editorial gripe: no way to find out who was there or how to contact them, except by chance – immensely frustrating when so many great minds were within a few minutes’ walk. Surely we can find a way to make availabl
